A flat road loop through Welkom — South Africa's only planned city, built from scratch in 1947 as the service centre for the Free State goldfields. The route circles the city's wide circular streets (designed without traffic lights using roundabouts), past gold mine head gears and the man-made Koponong Dam. A unique urban cycling experience through apartheid-era town planning and industrial gold mining history.
