A road loop from Sutherland — the coldest town in South Africa (minimum temps of -20°C in winter) and home to the South African Large Telescope (SALT), the largest optical telescope in the Southern Hemisphere. The route circles the observatory plateau on the Roggeveld escarpment at 1,450 m with extraordinary Karoo views and the giant telescope domes visible throughout. Best cycled in summer to avoid extreme cold.
