About this Route

A classic Free State road loop from Bloemfontein east to Thaba Nchu — the distinctive flat-topped mountain that gives the town its name (Black Mountain in Setswana). The R64 crosses the rolling grassland plains of the Free State Highveld. The Maria Moroka National Park near Thaba Nchu adds a wildlife detour option. An 80 km out-and-back on good tar through open sky Highveld with almost no traffic on weekends.
